July 17, 2015 (Investigation Update) Outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis Infections Linked to Raw, Frozen, Stuffed Chicken Entrees Produced by Aspen Foods

  • CDC, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections linked to raw, frozen, stuffed chicken entrees produced by Aspen Foods.
    • Three people infected with a strain of Salmonella Enteritidis have been reported from Minnesota. Two of these ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
    • The three illnesses in Minnesota occurred after people had eaten Antioch Farms brand Cordon Bleu stuffed chicken breast, which is produced by Aspen Foods.
  • On July 1, 2015, USDA-FSIS issued a public health alert due to concerns about illnesses caused by Salmonella that may be associated with raw, frozen, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken products.
  • On July 15, 2015, Aspen Foods issued a recall of approximately 1.9 million pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed, and breaded chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis.
    • Products were sold under many different brand names, including Antioch Farms. A full list is available on the Advice to Consumers page.
    • Products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-1358” on the packaging.
    • Products were shipped to retail stores and food service locations nationwide.
  • Consumers should check their freezers for the recalled frozen, raw chicken products and should not eat them. Retailers should not sell them and restaurants should not serve them.
    • Consumers should return recalled products to the place of purchase or contact Aspen Foods at (844) 277-6802.

D&D Foods, Inc., based in Omaha, Nebraska, is recalling 3-pound containers of Hy-Vee American Macaroni Salad because they were incorrectly labeled and may contain undeclared milk and wheat (gluten). July 15, 2015 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) Infections Linked to Frozen Raw Tuna

  • As of July 14, 2015, 60 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) have been reported from 11 states. Eleven ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
  • This outbreak is caused by Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) bacteria, formerly known as Salmonella Java.
    • The illness caused by this bacteria typically includes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12-72 hours after an exposure. Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) does not cause paratyphoid fever, enteric fever, or typhoid fever.
  • Epidemiologic and laboratory findings indicate that frozen raw tuna is the likely source of the infections.
    • Most ill people in the outbreak reported eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week before becoming sick.
  • The Minnesota Department of Health and Department of Agriculture isolated the outbreak strain from samples of unopened frozen raw tuna collected from a Minnesota grocery store where an ill person in this outbreak reported eating tuna sushi. The contaminated frozen raw tuna collected from the store was imported from Indonesia.
  • Restaurants and retailers should not sell or serve any tuna from the contaminated lot of frozen raw tuna tested by Minnesota imported from Indonesia by Osamu Corporation, or the previously recalled[PDF – 1 page] ground frozen yellowfin tuna also imported from Indonesia by Osamu Corporation.
  • People at higher risk for serious foodborne illness should not eat any raw fish or raw shellfish, regardless of an ongoing outbreak. These groups include:
    • Children younger than 5 years
    • Adults older than 65
    • Pregnant women
    • People with weakened immune systems.
  • CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) laboratory conducted antibiotic resistance testing on clinical isolates collected from three ill people infected with the outbreak strain.
    • Of the three isolates, one (33%) isolate was resistant to ampicillin and two (67%) were susceptible to all antibiotics tested on the NARMS panel.

    • Seven people infected with a strain of Salmonella Enteritidis have been reported from Minnesota (5), Oklahoma (1), and Wisconsin (1). Two of these ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

  • Barber Foods issued an expanded recall of approximately 1.7 million pounds of frozen, raw stuffed chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis on July 12, 2015. This recall expanded the initial Barber Foods recall of Chicken Kiev on July 2, 2015.
    • Products were sold under many different brand names, including Barber Foods, Meijer, and Sysco.
    • Products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-276” on the packaging.
    • Products were shipped to retail locations nationwide and Canada.
    • A list of recalled products is available.
    • Photos of recalled product labels are available.
  • On July 13, 2015, Omaha Steaks issued a recall of stuffed chicken breast entrees that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
    • Products were manufactured by Barber Foods and sold under the Omaha Steaks label.
    • Products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P-4230A” on the packaging.
    • A list of recalled products is available and includes chicken cordon bleu, chicken Kiev, and chicken with broccoli and cheese.
  • Consumers should check their freezers for recalled frozen chicken products and should not eat them. Retailers should not sell them and restaurants should not serve them.
